Progressive Policy Change Set to Spur Growth in Automotive Sector
The automotive industry in Kenya is an important enabler and catalyst for wealth creation, employment, and technology transfer.
Today, the Cabinet Secretary - Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, Hon. Moses K. Kuria held a sector meeting with Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers Association (KVMA) at the Association of Vehicle Assemblers of Kenya (AVA) plant in Mombasa.
The meeting reviewed ongoing local automotive initiatives and steps being taken toward increasing local content contribution. Among them, Kenya is progressively phasing out imported passenger vehicles. The industry also targets to increase locally assembled vehicles from current the 11,000 units through progressive automotive Policy which will lead to increased jobs.
The ongoing legal and regulatory reforms in the assembly and manufacturing of motor vehicles include the Automotive Development Bill, KS 1515 Standard, and the development of automotive sector policy. The meeting was attended by among others, Adil Popat, Executive Chairman of Simba Corporation, Matt Lloyd - Managing Director of AVA, Rita Kavashe - CEO of Isuzu Motors East Africa, and Arvinder Reel- Managing Director CFAO Motors.
The meeting also set preparatory agenda for the Presidential round-table on the automotive sector which will involve Government, Kenya Auto Bazaar Association (KABA), and Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers Association (KVMA).
